Description
A refined, oak, Arts and Crafts reclining armchair manufactured by Wylie & Lochhead Cabinetmakers, Glasgow.
Designed around 1900, this armchair has the most beautiful profile, with serpentine arms and side rails that are decorated with teardrop uprights.
The chair has been fully restored using time-honoured techniques and was first featured in Wylie & Lochhead’s catalogue c. 1897.
Reupholstered in a deep-cut velvet in gold with crimson accents by Nobilis Paris; it is the ultimate in sustainable luxury. New foam cushions, which have been layered with feathers in a cambric cover, enhance the sitter’s comfort.
Wylie & Lochhead was founded in 1829 by Robert Wylie and William Lochhead. Both gentlemen were cabinetmakers and although initially known as coffin builders, their success quickly rose when they began to produce Avantgarde furniture. This shift established Wylie & Lochhead as a household name in the early 19th century.
They commissioned pieces from the best European and British designers, and nurtured new Scottish designers such as E.A. Taylor, John Ednie and George Logan.
Such was the quality of their furniture that it was exhibited alongside pieces by ‘The Glasgow Four’; Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Margaret Macdonald, Frances Macdonald and Herbert McNair.
