Hand printed wallpaper gained popularity in Renaissance Europe amongst the emerging gentry. Those who could not afford the expense of tapestries turned to wallpaper to brighten their rooms. Consequently, early wallpaper emulated the scenes from tapestries. Later in the 17th century hand painted wallpapers became available from China. Then in the 18th Century the invention of the printing machine enabled the production of continuous rolls of paper which revolutionised the art. Wallpaper, once frowned upon as dated, is now enjoying a renaissance.

Whilst on our search for the most beautiful fabrics in the world, we came across several companies who were at the forefront of this revival. Additionally, we met a designer who had worked at Cole and Sons wallpapers for many years, She is still designing papers for companies as well as preparing unique commissions for clients. Amazingly, designs can now be custom printed onto wallpaper so your room is totally unique.

As an interesting aside – we also have a relationship with a stenciller, who can hand-stencil designs onto your walls or ceilings. Additionally she can do paint effects and upcycling. If these area services you require, please get in touch.
