Description

A Fully-Restored Original South African, Dutch Cape Riempie Chair

Riempie chairs were used by the early 19th century settlers who required lightweight chairs while they were on the move.

The chairs were often made by joiners and turners who also made wagons.

A particular characteristic of these chairs is that the front legs protrude above the seat rails; this was a device to keep loose seat cushions used at the time from slipping.

These lightweight, yet strong and simple chairs, are a visual symbol of South African heritage.
