Hand Stencilled Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson Wall Hanging

£675.00

This large and elegant wall-hanging is hand-stencilled on heavy Italian linen. The design is derived from a pattern used by Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson.

Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson, who was born in Balfron, Scotland on 9 April 1817, was an eminent Scottish architect and architectural theorist who pioneered sustainable building.

Thomson favoured classical architecture, which earned him his nickname Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson. His style was not, however, limited to the classical style as many of his buildings and designs have oriental and Egyptian elements.

Thomson achieved increased recognition as an architect when his works were belatedly rediscovered toward the end of the twentieth century.

After his death, a scholarship was founded in his name to assist students at the Glasgow School of Art to travel abroad. This scholarship was subsequently won by the young Charles Rennie Mackintosh and enabled his travels to Italy and France.
