Description

An Elegant Arts And Crafts Mahogany Dining Set by James Garvie & Sons, Aberdeen & London.

Beautifully restored by our skilled craftspeople, the seats have been re-webbed and have fresh hessian, horsehair (secured by bridle ties), cotton felt and FR calico. The wood has been cleaned, traditionally waxed and buffed.

The set consists of one carver and four dining chairs.  It has been reupholstered in a thick, woven fabric from Etro, Milan. Displaying refined, curved lines and subtle colourways, the pattern includes playful frogs boating on a lily pond.

James Garvie & Sons had a cabinet workshop and a furniture showroom situated at 55 Rose Street and 425 Union Street in Aberdeen. They were producing furniture from the late nineteenth to early twentieth centuries.

Garvie advertised themselves as ‘Makers & Designers of Interior Woodwork, Furniture & Upholstery’ and as ‘Carvers and Decorative Artists’ and were contractors for carvings at Crathie Church. In addition, Garvie’s beautiful mahogany and limewood carvings can be viewed at the River Wear Commissioners’ Building in Sunderland.

The Arts & Crafts movement, initiated by William Morris and championed by fellow designers, marked a revolt against mass-production during the late Victorian period.

This ‘society’ of artists, designers and architects heralded a return to hand-crafted, well-constructed pieces; with the beauty and importance of natural materials firmly at its heart.

Etro was established in 1968 by Gimmo Etro. Initially founding the company to supply textiles to the rapidly-increasing Italian fashion industry, Gimmo was subsequently inspired to create his own fashion line. Etro has become renowned for its rich design techniques and exquisite patterns; particularly for resurrecting the Paisley Pattern.

Officially launched in 1985, Etro homewares offered its customers not only the opportunity to wear its exquisite creations but also to surround themselves with its luxurious designs in their living space.

A Ready-to-Wear collection for men and women was established in 1991 by his son and daughter, Kean and Veronia; their first fashion show was launched in 1994.
