Description

An exquisite, Aesthetic Movement, ebonised, side chair with embroidered fabric and Parisian trim. Made circa 1880, it features pierced Japanese-motif sections on the back.

Professionally restored in our workshop by our master craftspeople, the chair stands elegantly poised on refined, spear-like legs.

The chair has been skilfully reupholstered in a magnificent, embroidered, golden-yellow fabric by Colefax & Fowler and hand-finished with Houlès, Paris trim.

Spanning from 1860 to 1900, the Aesthetic Movement rejoiced in the concept of ‘Art for Art’s Sake’. Proponents of Aestheticism rejected the ugliness of the Industrial Age and instead crafted pieces that concentrated on the beauty of an object above all else.

It was the writer and critic Walter Hamilton who first named the movement, on his publishing of ‘The Aesthetic Movement in England’ in 1882.

Colefax & Fowler has a history that extends over almost one hundred years. To this day, their timeless and refined designs continue to inspire interior designers, furniture restorers and the public; allowing each to create the most beautiful of indoor spaces.

Houlès designs and creates the finest of trimmings and fabrics. Still family-owned, the company was established in Paris, by father and son Félix and André Houlès, in 1928. Beginning with one store at 18 rue Saint-Nicolas, the company is now established in over 160 countries worldwide.

Presidential residences and castles, such as le Château de Versailles, often select Houlès’ passements for their restoration projects.
