Description

A William IV Scroll-Arm Sofa Restored & Re-Covered in Ticking by Kravet, New York,

Standing as either a statement piece or as an elegant finishing-touch for your home, this antique, mahogany, William IV sofa (c.1835) has been fully restored using traditional methods.

Re-upholstered in a classic ticking, by Kravet of New York, the stripes studiously follow the graceful lines of the sofa’s carved, high scroll-arms. Two decorated panels nestle neatly above the raised, turned fluted legs with original brass caps and castors. A buttoned, squab cushion and two self-piped bolsters, featuring hand-stitched pleating, complete the look.

William IV reigned from 1830 to 1837 and the style of this period took its inspiration from Greece and Egypt. Young men of ample means who undertook The Grand Tour, as part of their educational rite of passage, could fully-immerse themselves into the intoxicating world of classical antiquity.

The influence of this exposure is gloriously reflected in the furniture design, architecture and art of the period.

Since its establishment in 1918, the fifth-generation family business of Kravet, New York has specialised in producing the most exquisite fabrics, trimmings, carpets, wall coverings and accessories.

The company takes inspiration from many sources including those from the fashion houses of Ralph Lauren, Diane von Furstenberg and Oscar de la Renta. The house of Kravet owns GP & J Baker, Brunschwig & Fils, Lee Jofa and Donghia,
