Description

A birch and rush side chair made by William Birch of High Wycombe. Beautifully restored by our skilled craftspeople, the chair features a comfortable squab cushion in a delightful, Oriental Fishes fabric by Lee Jofa.

William Birch was a furniture designer who specialised in chair making in the Arts & Crafts style. Renowned for his rush and cane seating, over a century later, these pieces are still highly prized for their comfort.

Birch supplied furniture to Liberty & Co of London. Both companies saw the value in mirroring the original Arts & Crafts style but at a more accessible price-point than the custom-made pieces by William Morris and his contemporaries of the ‘Cotswold School’.

Whilst Birch’s furniture was produced partly by machines it retained handcrafted, Arts & Crafts qualities, such as exposed joints and quarter sawn hardwoods.

Lee Jofa, formed in 1823, has over two centuries of textile expertise. Kravet, who acquired the company in 1985, continue to produce some of the world’s most ground-breaking weaves. Many of the original, early 19th century Jofa designs are still being produced to this day.
