Description

Fully-restored by our master craftspeople, this outstanding set of four ebonised chairs, would bring an air of elegance to any home. They have been reupholstered in a pearl slub velvet

Hours of work were spent to restore the drop-in seats. New seat frames were constructed and re-webbed, and have fresh hessian, horsehair (hand-secured with bridle ties), cotton felt and FR cotton calico.

The chairs’ design is very much in the style of Josef Hoffmann and there are also echoes of Mackintosh’s ladder back chair.  The refined lines of the back and side slats create a dramatic, geometric effect.

Closely related to Art Nouveau, the Vienna Secession (Wiener Secession) was formed in 1897 by a union of artists, sculptors and architects. Some of the main proponents of the movement were Josef Hoffmann, Otto Wagner, Koloman Moser and Egon Shiele.

The Vienna Secession has links to the ‘Glasgow Four’, comprising Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Margaret MacDonald, Frances MacDonald and Herbert James McNair.

Mackintosh not only influenced the Viennese Arts & Crafts movement but also drew inspiration from them. Mackintosh visited Vienna on several occasions and Josef Hoffmann, who established the Wiener Werkstätte in 1903, made several trips to Glasgow.
