Description

A highly collectable William Lethaby mahogany chair, c. 1900.  It has a tall, slatted back with circular marquetry inserts featuring stylised plant forms. Gently curved arms open out onto a close-nailed upholstered seat on square legs and pad feet.

Many hours were spent, by our skilled craftspeople, re-webbing and re-padding with horsehair (secured with bridle ties), fresh hessian, cotton felt and FR calico.

It has been reupholstered in Colefax & Fowler’s beautifully marled Conway linen. The blending of differently coloured fibres creates an incredibly opulent appearance.

William Richard Lethaby was an acclaimed English architect and furniture designer. His designs had great influence on the Arts and Crafts movement and early Modernist movement.

Houlès designs and creates the finest of trimmings and fabrics. Still family-owned, it was founded in Paris by father and son Félix and André Houlès in 1928. The company, which began with one store at 18 rue Saint-Nicolas, is now established in over 160 countries.

Presidential residences and castles, such as le Château de Versailles, often select Houlès’ passements for their restoration projects.
