Description

A 1920’s Louis XVI-Style, Ebonised, Bergere Armchair

Make a statement with this beautiful, mahogany, Louis XVI-style armchair.

The chair has been skilfully restored by our master craftspeople and reupholstered in a magnificent gaufrage velvet from Paris; elegantly finished with Empire style trim from Houlès, Paris.

A caned, oval back featuring hand-painted botanical details, gracefully extends to carved, rolled arms. The chair is ebonised with subtle, gold leaf detailing and is poised on fluted, front legs.

The soft and extremely comfortable handmade cushions have been filled with the softest down feathers, housed in a fine, FR cambric ‘case’. Cambric, a finely woven cotton, is used to prevent the feathers from escaping through to the finished fabric.

Houlès designs and creates the finest of trimmings and fabrics. Still family-owned, the  company was established in Paris, by father and son Félix and André Houlès, in 1928. The company, which began with one store at 18 rue Saint-Nicolas, is now established in over 160 countries.

Presidential residences and castles, such as le Château de Versailles, often select Houlès’ passements for their restoration projects.

Louis XVI style or Louis Seize, as it is often referred to, is renowned for its serenity and refinement. The love of the outdoors and nature, during this period, was brought together in furniture, architecture and interior decoration.

Mahogany was often the wood of choice for Louis XVI-style pieces as the fine grain was highly appreciated, either as solid wood or in the use of veneer.
